Who is it for?
It is for anyone wanting to advance their knowledge of fire safety. This includes people wanting to enhance their career prospects and managers, supervisors and staff from all types of organisations who need a broad understanding of health and safety issues.
It is particularly suitable for people holding the NGC1 qualification who wish to enhance their safety knowledge.

Individuals gain a valuable qualification for their CVs. Many individuals take the NEBOSH National Fire Safety and Risk Management Certificate as a valuable first step on a career in fire safety or as a means of improving their fire safety knowledge.
Organisations of all types and sizes ensure that line managers have a sound understanding of the principles of fire safety they can use to help build an effective fire safety culture in the company. Employers and controllers of non-domestic premises to which the public have access must make fire risk assessments of their premises. Successful completion of this course helps to ensure that candidates can complete fire risk assessments in simple premises.
Recognition?
The Fire Safety and Risk Management Certificate syllabus was developed in conjunction with IOSH’s (the Institution of Occupational Safety and Health) Specialist Fire Risk Management group and is mapped to the National Occupational Standards for Fire Safety.
Course content
The course covers the principles of fire and explosion, causes and prevention of fires, fire protection in buildings and ensuring the safety of people in the event of fire. Crucially, the practical element of the course also ensures that participants can carry out, unaided, a fire risk assessment and prepare a recommendations report for management.
Further development
Unit 1 of this qualification (Management of health and safety) is common to the NEBOSH National General Certificate, the National Certificate in Construction and the Certificate in Fire Safety and Risk Management. You do not have to sit Unit 1 again if you have passed it within the last five year. This makes it possible to gain additional qualifications without resitting Unit 1.
How is the course assessed?
Candidates are assessed with written examinations for each of the two taught units (one unit if already exempt from Unit 1) and a practical exercise conducted in a workplace.
How are the courses delivered?
The course is delivered in several ways:
- As a two week block of 10 days plus 1 day for the exams.
- As a one-week block Students holding the NGC1 may be claim exemption from that paper but the qualification must be less than five years old on the day of the exams.
- As an evening course (3 hours per week) over an 11 week period plus a daytime exam. This option is only available to delegates holding the NGC Unit 1 qualification gained less than five years before the exam date.
